A man went on the rampage causing hundreds of euro of damage putting an axe through a plastic garden snowman after being dismissed from a horticultural course.

Letterkenny Court.

Letterkenny Court.

Michael Strain, from Ros Suilighe, Oldtown, Letterkenny, pleaded guilty to the charges of criminal damage.

Letterkenny District Court heard how Strain, 27, went berserk after being dismissed from a horticultural course which was being held at the grounds in St Conal's Hospital.

His behaviour had become so erratic and challenging that organisers of the course felt they had no other option but to dismiss him.

Mr Strain, was so angered by the decision that on the 13th of January 2015 returned to the horticultural centre at St Conal's Hospital and carried out the act of criminal damage.

The court heard how the defendant completely destroyed flower pots, hanging baskets and plants as well as driving an axe through a snowman which was also on the grounds.

The cost of the damage exceeded €400, and Garda Paul Maguire arrested Mr Strain for carrying out the damage on January 16th 2015.

Solicitor for the defendant Kieran Dillon told the court how his client held his hands up very early and took responsibility for his actions.

He entered an early guilty plea which helped greatly with the investigation and was remorseful for what he had done.

He had been very upset at being dismissed from the course and retaliated in a very, very poor way.

Mr Dillon added that his client had a huge number of behavioural problems and pointed out that he attended a special school during his youth.

Mr Dillon also added that the defendant was on medication for his behavioural problems and prior to going to prison had lived at home with his mother.

Judge Paul Kelly took into account his early guilty plea and the fact he had a number of psychological issues and added another month to the prison term he's already serving for a separate offence.
