A former Donegal footballer is to face trial for assaulting a Garda after he was stopped for allegedly drunk-driving.

Tommy Ryan was stopped along with his wife Eileen on September 17th, 2012.

Ryan, 46, from Termon, was part of the 1992 Donegal All-Ireland winning team.

Letterkenny District Court heard Ryan is alleged to have used threatening behaviour and refusing to provide a specimen of breath.

The alleged offences all took place close to his home.

His wife Eileen, 45, is charged being intoxicated in a public place, using threatening and abusive behaviour and refusing to give her name and address.

Ryan’s solicitor Kevin McElhinney said all the charges will be contested when the case is heard in full.

He asked that the case against his client be joined with the cases against Mrs Ryan at a full hearing.

Judge Paul Kelly adjourned the case to Letterkenny District Court on April 28th next for a full hearing.

Mr Ryan or his wife were not in court.
