A man who failed to stop at a Gardaí checkpoint has been fined for having no tax or insurance on his vehicle.

Michael McCrudden, with an address at Tullyannon, Newtoncunningham appeared before Letterkenny District Court yesterday afternoon.

Garda Mooney told the court that in March of this year they became aware of a Blue Rover Hatchback acting suspiciously.

Garda Mooney said, "We signalled the car to stop, but when it failed to do so - we then activated our lights to pursue the vehicle.

"The defendant increased the speed of their vehicle significantly - and we decided not continue with the pursuit as it was heading towards a built-up area and would've been dangerous.

"However, a short time after that - we found the vehicle abandoned in an estate nearby.

"The vehicle had no tax disc or insurance on the vehicle."

Gardaí traced the vehicle and found that the owner of the vehicle was Mr McCrudden.

Judge Paul Kelly warned the defendant not to come before him again on a motoring offence - and fined him €150 for non-display of tax disc - and a further €150 for having no insurance.

He gave the defendant two months to pay both fines.
